College saddened by loss of past-President

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons has been saddened to hear that Professor Alasdair Steele-Bodger CBE MA BSc FRASE FRAgS FRCVS, its President in 1972-3, has died.

Professor Steele-Bodger, who was in his 80s, was first elected to RCVS Council in 1960 and was also a President of the British Veterinary Association, the British Small Animal Veterinary Association and the Midland Counties Veterinary Association. He was also an honorary veterinary consultant to the British Agricultural Export Council.

Initially in mixed practice in Lichfield, Staffordshire, Professor Steele-Bodger went on to become Professor of Veterinary Clinical Studies at the University of Cambridge from 1979-90. He was awarded a Fellowship by election from the RCVS in 1975 and the CBE in 1980.

“Alasdair was small in stature but a giant in terms of personality and charisma. He had a profound and inspirational influence on many within the profession and we will miss him immensely. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time,” said current President Jill Nute.

A Service of Thanksgiving to celebrate Professor Steele-Bodger’s remarkable life will be held on Tuesday 30 September at 2.30pm at St Bridget's Church, Skenfrith, Monmouthshire. Family, friends and colleagues are warmly invited to attend.
