New edition of RCVS Guide to Professional Conduct published

16 January 2004

The 2004 edition of the RCVS Guide to Professional Conduct has been published and mailed to all members of the RCVS this week.

This latest edition of the Guide follows a similar format to recent editions, and incorporates changes that have been agreed by RCVS Council in the past two years.

The main changes that members should be familiar with are:

  • Revised guidance where different veterinary surgeons treat the same group of animals (page 30);

  • Amendments to the legislation relating to listed and trainee veterinary nurses (page 33);

  • Advice concerning the storage and record keeping for ketamine (page 41);

  • Changes to the complaints procedures (pages 46-7); and,

  • New annexes:

    • Medicinal compounds for use in dart guns;
    • Animal abuse, child abuse and domestic violence;
    • Guidance for veterinary surgeons working in teams;
    • Code of practice for organisations (corporate practice);
    • Using microchips to reunite animals with their owners;
    • Guidelines on renal transplantation in cats;
    • RCVS Practice Standards.

Annexes to the Guide are also available in hard copy from the Professional Conduct Department (Tel 020 7202 0789).

The RCVS is still in discussion with the DTI and VMD regarding the implementation of the Competition Commission's recommendations as reported in RCVS News (November 2003) and Latest News.

Changes to the RCVS Guide to Professional Conduct may become necessary during the course of the year. If and when these changes are implemented, they will be incorporated into the online version of the Guide and members will be sent separate notification of these.
