Public health nutritionist to speak on importance of vet involvement in food security at RCVS AGM

At this year’s Royal College Day – our Annual General Meeting and awards ceremony in central London – a celebrated public health nutritionist will deliver a talk on the importance of the role of veterinary surgeons in food security and safety. 

Susan Jebb OBE, Professor of Diet and Population Health at the University of Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences and the current chair of the Food Standards Agency (until 30 June 2024 when her three-year term expires) will deliver her talk titled The Role of Vets in the Food System – a view from the FSA on Friday, 5 July 2024.

Professor Jebb is the guest speaker of our President Dr Sue Paterson FRCVS (pictured) whose presidential term comes to an end at Royal College Day 2024. She said: “It is fantastic that Professor Jebb will be attending and talking at our AGM, bringing the insights of her long experience in the field of public health and, latterly, at the FSA. With this talk I hope she can give a valuable insight into the role that vets play in promoting sustainable farming practices and in helping to ensure food security.”

Royal College Day takes place at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) from 11am, starting with the Annual General Meeting where: the newly appointed, elected and re-elected members of RCVS Council and Veterinary Nurses Council will be welcomed to their terms; the Annual Report and Financial Statements for 2023 will be presented and approved; and the new RCVS Officer Team (comprising President, Vice-Presidents and Treasurer) will be confirmed by Council members.

The awards ceremony takes place from 1pm with the presentation of this year’s RCVS Honours and Awards, including the Queen’s Medal and Veterinary Nurse Golden Jubilee Award. This will be followed by an address from Sue Paterson as outgoing RCVS President, the investiture and inaugural address of Linda Belton MRCVS as President for 2024-25 and the investiture of Professor Tim Parkin FRCVS as Junior Vice-President and Sue Paterson as Senior Vice-President. The event will close with Professor Jebb’s guest talk.
