RCVS Trust awards double number of Travel Scholarships
13 September 2007
The RCVS Trust has awarded a second round of Travel Scholarships, the additional ten awards bringing its support for veterinary education and animal welfare to over £600,000 in the last 12 months alone.
On hearing the news of his award, Mickey Tivers MRCVS, Senior Clinical Training Scholar in Small Animal Surgery at the RVC said: "I applied for an RCVS Trust Travel Scholarship to attend the 2007 American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) Veterinary Symposium in Chicago - the largest veterinary surgical conference in the World.
"As a resident in small animal surgery at the RVC, attending the ACVS symposium is a fantastic opportunity for me. Not only is it a unique learning experience but it will enable me to meet colleagues from America and other parts of the world and gain an insight into my specialist field abroad. I have also been fortunate enough to have an abstract accepted for presentation at the symposium."
Mickey explained that attendance at conferences abroad can be prohibitively expensive for postgraduate students and added: "Whilst there are a number of funds available to facilitate postgraduate activities, the Trust's Travel Scholarships are extremely generous and easily accessible. I am very grateful to them for helping to fund my expedition!"
Gerri McHugh, Director of the Trust, said: “We are delighted to now offer two rounds of Travel Scholarships every year. This is part of our drive to increase the flexibility and relevance of our grant-making programme and we are looking to build on this over the coming year.”
